CAOHC/NHCA 2014 Webinar Series:
"Plugging the Holes in Hearing Conservation Programs: Promoting Prevention and Overcoming Obstacles”
Webinar #2: "Assessing Hearing Protector Attenuation on Individual Ears”
Description: Knowing how well individual workers are protected against a hazard seems like a logical first step to ensuring effectiveness in a safety program; however, with hearing protection, it’s not as easy as it sounds. The noise reduction rating (NRR) is not a reliable metric for individual worker attenuation. Newer technologies, Field Attenuation Estimation Systems (FAES), are advancing in popularity as employers attempt to ensure individual workers are properly protected. There are several commercially available FAES, and this session covers the approaches, benefits and recommendations for including hearing protection fit-testing in the HCP.
Presenter: CAPT William Murphy, Ph.D. - National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health / USPHS | USA
CAPT William Murphy is a co-leader of the Hearing Loss Prevention Team in the Engineering and Physical Hazards branch of the Division of Applied Research and Technology at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. His research has specialized in measurement and rating of hearing protection devices, fit testing of hearing protection devices and in the assessment of impulse noise and its effects on hearing. He has served as an officer in the Commissioned Corps of the United States Public Health Service since 1993.
