6/2006 - A new hearing conservation toolbox has also been developed for
DoD hearing conservation professionals.
5/2006 - American Speech Language Hearing Association launches new "Listen to Your Buds" materials. These materials, which include bookmarks, posters, and coloring banners are intended to raise awareness
of the risk of hearing loss from technology, particularly among children.
5/2006 - Article titled "Now Hear This" describing part of the "Crank
It Down Kids" hearing conservation program appears in May 31, 2006
online edition of the Longmont /Daily Times-Call.
5/2006 - The fourth NIOSH/NHCA Best Practices Conference will be held August
10-11, 2006 in Covington, KY. The conference will be on barriers to

4/2006 - The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work has
released a report summarizing noise exposures and related health effects
in the member nations of the EU
4/2006 - Call for papers for the 2007 NHCA Conference in Savannah, GA.
3/2006 - American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA)
launches a campaign called "Turn Down the Volume" designed to educate
the public on new technologies and hearing loss.
3/2006 - Apple Computer has release free software that allows users to
set volume limits on their iPod units.
3/2006 - NHCA members Theresa Schulz and Doug Ohlin interviewed in
an article on hearing loss in the military. The article, titled "Rates
of hearing loss climbing for troops," appeared March 8, 2006 in the
online version of the MercuryNews.com.
3/2006 - Survey commissioned by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association finds that more than one-half of American high school students reports
at least one symptom of hearing loss. Read a CNN article summarizing
the results of the survey.
3/2006 - American Society of Safety Engineers declares May 3, 2006 to
be "Occupational Safety and Health Professional Day."
2/2006 - 31st annual NHCA conference held in Tampa, FL. The
conference was a great success. A number of awards were presented at
the conference, including the 2005 Media Award, the 2005 Outstanding
Hearing Conservationist Award, the 2005 Michael Beall Threadgill Award,
and three 2005 Conference Travel Awards. A charitable golf tournament
was also held, which raised several thousand dollars for the NHCA
student scholarship fund!
2/2006 - Yale Professor Peter Rabinowitz encourages Yellowstone
National Park to limit noise exposure from snowmobiles.
2/2006 - NIOSH Hearing Loss Research Program undergoing scientific
review by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies. Click

2/2006 - US representative Edward Markey (D-Mass) has written a letter to the
National Institute for Deafness and Communications Disorders asking that
the agency review the risk to hearing from portable music players.
2/2006 - NHCA member Brian Fligor featured in an e-Seminar (hosted by
audiologyonline.com) on the risks of hearing loss associated with MP3
players.
2/2006 - Apple is being sued by an individual who wishes to file a
class action suit over the alleged risk of hearing loss presented by
iPods.

1/2006 - Several articles and online segments appeared around the first

including "Don't let music silence life's soundtrack" on Minneapolis-St
Paul StarTribune.com, iPod earbuds
could damage hearing" on CNN.com, and "Turn down that iPod" on NPR.
12/2005 - NHCA member Michael Santucci interviewed in a TV segment
on the risk to hearing from personal music devices. The segment,
titled, "Boom of mp3 players raises concerns over hearing loss,"
appeared December 19, 2005 on the ABC Evening News in Chicago and
includes video.

9/2005 - The Social Security Administration (SSA)
has released an Advanced
Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on compesnation
for hearing impairments. The SSA is seeking public
comment on this issue. Contact information for the SSA
is listed in the ANPR document.
9/2005 - The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has released
the results of a study titled "Noise-Induced
Hearing Loss and Tinnitus Associated with Military Service
from World War II to the Present," which was written by
a committee that included a number of NHCA members. The
study can be purchased
online at the National Academies Press website.
9/2005 - The National Institute for Occupational
Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently reviewing its National
Occupational Research Agenda (NORA). This
agenda determines the types of research that NIOSH conducts. NHCA
members can provide input on the priority areas identified
in NORA by visiting the NORA webpage and completing NIOSH's feedback
form.
9/2005 - NHCA member Brian
Fligor interviewed in an article on nytimes.com (the
New York Times website) titled "The
Claim: MP3 Players Can Cause Hearing
Loss." The article appeared on Sept 6, 2005.
9/2005 - A free educator workshop "Have
Fun Fighting Dangerous Decibels" will also be held from
4:30 to 6:30 PM on February 16, 2006 in Tampa, FL, in conjunction
with the NHCA Annual Conference.
8/2005 - The Mine Safety and Health Administration
(MSHA) is soliciting
public comments on the usefulness of continuing
the reporting and recordkeeping requirements in 30 CFR Part
62 noise rule. ]
Each recordkeeping requirement is listed in the table along
with the estimated financial burden to the mining industry.
The agency wants to know if the records required under Part
62 are necessary and in a form that is useful. If you
are interested in coordinating an official NHCA response to
this MSHA, please contact NHCA.
8/2005 - NHCA signs charter supporting for
the 2005 European Week "Stop that Noise!" campaign
8/2005 - Conference Pre-announcement:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have awarded
a NIOSH Conference Grant for the first national conference
on the "Prevention of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss in Children
and Adolescents". The conference will be a collaborative
effort on behalf of the Oregon Health & Science University
(OHSU), the National Hearing Conservation Association (NHCA),
the Marion Downs Hearing Center (MDHC) and the University of
Northern Colorado. It is expected to occur during the Fall
of 2006. Additional information will be forthcoming as conference
details become available.
7/2005 - OSHA releases a Safety and Health
Information Bulletin titled "Innovative
Workplace Safety Accommodations for Hearing-Impaired Workers."
7/2005 - The 9th "Mechanics of Hearing" Workshop
was hosted in Portland, Oregon
on July 23-28, 2005. View a summary

7/2005 - ANSI standard S12.60-2002 "American
National Standard
Acoustical Performance Criteria, Design Requirements, and Guidelines
for
Schools," is being made available for free to interested

7/2005 - A summary of the joint NHCA/NIOSH symposium
on impulse noise, held in Cincinnatti, OH in May 2003, has
been published. The article, which is not available online,
appears in the March-April 2005 edition of the Noise Control
Engineering Journal
7/2005 - Applications are now available for the 2005 NHCA student scholarship
awards and faculty recommendation form and student conference travel awards. Read more about the student

6/2005 - A team of researchers at the Tampere University
of Technology is currently working to develop a wearable T-shirt
that would display
the level of noise the wearer is exposed
to. NHCA

@ Work," sponsored by "The Hearing Academy" announced for
