NHCA Events Calendar4/2008 – NHCA issues the call for papers for the 2008 NHCA Conference in Portland, Oregon, from February 21-23, 2008.

3/2007 – The March 2007 issue of Hearing Review is a special issue on hearing loss prevention, with articles written by many NHCA members.

3/2007 - NHCA and the University of Washington will be co-sponsoring a 1-day course titled "Current Solutions to Workplace Noise Hazards" in Seattle, WA on May 15, 2007.

11/2006 - 3M Corporation releases a checklist for hearing conservation.  Also, the Aearo Corporation has released a consumer guide called "Life is Loud: Know Your Hearing Protection.

11/2006 - OSHA Alliance releases new brochure on hearing protection and shooting, developed as part of the NHCA-OSHA Alliance and in conjunction with the National Shooting Sports Foundation.

10/2006 - NASA releases new free PC software for instructional use in audiology and hearing conservation learning environments called MACSUG (Microprocessor Audiometer Computer Simulator User Gizmo).

10/2006 - iPod noise level research by NHCA member Brian Fligor and other featured on the front page of the October 19, 2006 Denver Post.

10/2006 - Federal Appeals Court rules UPS discriminated against hearing-impaired workers by not allowing them to drive delivery vehicles.

10/2006 - A group of high school students in Michigan is advocating for regulations on personal music players.

9/2006 - Researchers identify New York City subways as potential source of noise-induced hearing loss.

7/2006 - United Kingdom Ministry of Defence determines that army members who play bagpipes, bugles,or drums are at risk of hearing loss.

7/2006 - Belgian researchers discover genetic link related to noise-induced hearing loss susceptibility.

6/2006 - Pharmaceutical company initiates clinical trial for drug designed to prevent and treat noise-induced hearing loss.

6/2006 - A new hearing conservation toolbox has also been developed for DoD hearing conservation professionals.

5/2006 - American Speech Language Hearing Association launches new "Listen to Your Buds" materials.  These materials, which include bookmarks, posters, and coloring banners are intended to raise awareness of the risk of hearing loss from technology, particularly among children.

5/2006 - Article titled "Now Hear This" describing part of the "Crank It Down Kids" hearing conservation program appears in May 31, 2006 online edition of the Longmont /Daily Times-Call.

5/2006 - The fourth NIOSH/NHCA Best Practices Conference will be held August 10-11, 2006 in Covington, KY.  The conference will be on barriers to effective use of hearing protectors.

4/2006 - The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work has released a report summarizing noise exposures and related health effects in the member nations of the EU

4/2006 - Call for papers for the 2007 NHCA Conference in Savannah, GA.

3/2006 - American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) launches a campaign called "Turn Down the Volume" designed to educate the public on new technologies and hearing loss.

3/2006 - Apple Computer has release free software that allows users to set volume limits on their iPod units.

3/2006 - NHCA members Theresa Schulz and Doug Ohlin interviewed in an article on hearing loss in the military.  The article, titled "Rates of hearing loss climbing for troops," appeared March 8, 2006 in the online version of the MercuryNews.com.

3/2006 - Survey commissioned by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association finds that more than one-half of American high school students reports at least one symptom of hearing loss.  Read a CNN article summarizing the results of the survey.

2/2006 - 31st annual NHCA conference held in Tampa, FL.  The conference was a great success.  A number of awards were presented at the conference, including the 2005 Media Award, the 2005 Outstanding Hearing Conservationist Award, the 2005 Michael Beall Threadgill Award, and three 2005 Conference Travel Awards.  A charitable golf tournament was also held, which raised several thousand dollars for the NHCA student scholarship fund!

2/2006 - Apple is being sued by an individual who wishes to file a
class action suit over the alleged risk of hearing loss presented by iPods.

1/2006 - Tips for reducing risk of hearing loss from iPods presented on the January 5, 2006 David Letterman Show!

1/2006 - NHCA is a co-sponsor of the 2006 North American Occupational Safety and Health Week (April 30-May 6, 2006).

1/2006 - Guitarist Pete Townshend speaks out about risk of hearing loss from use of iPods in an article on Yahoo News! called "Pete Townshend warns iPod users.

1/2006 - Several articles and online segments appeared around the first of the year describing the risk of hearing from iPods and MP3 players, including "Don't let music silence life's soundtrack" on Minneapolis-St Paul StarTribune.com, iPod earbuds
could damage hearing
" on CNN.com, and "Turn down that iPod" on NPR.

12/2005 - NHCA member Michael Santucci interviewed in a TV segment on  the risk to hearing from personal music devices. The segment, titled, "Boom of mp3 players raises concerns over hearing loss," appeared December 19, 2005 on the ABC Evening News in Chicago and includes video.

10/2005 - First European Congress on "Hearing @ Work," announced for October 3-4, 2005 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

10/2005 - International symposium on Pharmacologic Strategies for Prevention and Treatment of Hearing Loss and Tinnitus held in   Niagara Falls, Canada, from October 9–12, 2005.

8/2005 - International Congress and Exposition on Noise Control Engineering (InterNoise 2005) held August 7-10, 2005 in Rio de  Janeiro, Brazil.

9/2005 -  The Social Security Administration (SSA) has released an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on compesnation for hearing impairments.  The SSA is seeking public comment on this issue.  Contact information for the SSA is listed in the ANPR document.

9/2005 - The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has released the results of a study titled "Noise-Induced Hearing Loss and Tinnitus Associated with Military Service from World War II to the Present," which was written by a committee that included a number of NHCA members.  The study can be purchased online at the National Academies Press website.

9/2005 - The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently reviewing its National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA).  This agenda determines the types of research that NIOSH conducts.  NHCA members can provide input on the priority areas identified in NORA by visiting the NORA webpage and completing NIOSH's feedback form.

9/2005 - NHCA member Brian Fligor interviewed in an article on nytimes.com (the New York Times website) titled "The Claim: MP3 Players Can Cause Hearing Loss."  The article appeared on Sept 6, 2005.

9/2005 - A free educator workshop "Have Fun Fighting Dangerous Decibels" will also be held from 4:30 to 6:30 PM on February 16, 2006 in Tampa, FL, in conjunction with the NHCA Annual Conference.

8/2005 - The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is soliciting public comments on the usefulness of continuing the reporting and recordkeeping requirements in 30 CFR Part 62 noise rule. ] Each recordkeeping requirement is listed in the table along with the estimated financial burden to the mining industry. The agency wants to know if the records required under Part 62 are necessary and in a form that is useful.  If you are interested in coordinating an official NHCA response to this MSHA, please contact NHCA.

8/2005 - NHCA signs charter supporting for the 2005 European Week "Stop that Noise!" campaign

8/2005 - Conference Pre-announcement: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have awarded a NIOSH Conference Grant for the first national conference on the "Prevention of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss in Children and Adolescents". The conference will be a collaborative effort on behalf of the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), the National Hearing Conservation Association (NHCA), the Marion Downs Hearing Center (MDHC) and the University of Northern Colorado. It is expected to occur during the Fall of 2006. Additional information will be forthcoming as conference details become available.

7/2005 - OSHA releases a Safety and Health Information Bulletin titled "Innovative Workplace Safety Accommodations for Hearing-Impaired Workers."

7/2005 - The 9th "Mechanics of Hearing" Workshop was hosted in Portland, Oregon on July 23-28, 2005.  View a summary of the event. Streaming video of several presentations from the workshop can also be viewed (Requires RealPlayer, a free download).

7/2005 - ANSI standard S12.60-2002 "American National Standard Acoustical Performance Criteria, Design Requirements, and Guidelines for Schools," is being made available for free to interested professionals.   Read the ANSI press release that
describes the standard and how to obtain it.

7/2005 - NHCA's series of Practical Guides on hearing conservation are now available online.

7/2005 - European Agency for Safety and Health at Work unveils new campaign called "'Stop that noise! Noise at work – it can cost you more than your hearing."

7/2005 - A summary of the joint NHCA/NIOSH symposium on impulse noise, held in Cincinnatti, OH in May 2003, has been published.  The article, which is not available online, appears in the March-April 2005 edition of the Noise Control Engineering Journal

7/2005 - Applications are now available for the 2005 NHCA student scholarship awards and faculty recommendation form and student conference travel awards.  Read more about the student scholarship and travel awards, about the NHCA Scholarship Foundation, or about student membership in NHCA.

6/2005 - A team of researchers at the Tampere University of Technology is currently working to develop a wearable T-shirt that would display the level of noise the wearer is exposed to. NHCA will continue to follow this potentially exciting opportunity for promoting hearing conservation.

5/2005 - First European Congress on "Hearing @ Work," sponsored by "The Hearing Academy" announced  for October 3-4, 2005 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. This non-NHCA event is intended to help improve the quality of hearing conservation programs.

4/2005 - NHCA now calling for paper submissions for 2006 Conference in Tampa, FL (Feb 16-18, 2006).

4/2005 - 2006 NHCA conference webpage added to NHCA website.

2/2005 - New "Crank it Down: Noise...Hearing Loss and Children" brochure available on NHCA website.  Brochure is a joint venture of NHCA and the American Academy of Audiology.

2/2005 - 30th annual NHCA conference held in Tucson, AZ.  The conference was a great success.  A number of awards were presented at the conference, including the 2004 Media Award, the 2004 Outstanding Hearing Conservationist Award, and three 2004 Conference Travel Awards.  A charitable golf tournament was also held, which raised $2,950 for the NHCA student scholarship fund!

2/2005 - OSHA unveils a new e-tool on Noise and Hearing Conservation, developed as a joint project of the NHCA-OSHA Alliance

1/2005 - NHCA mentioned in recent article in Environmental Health Perspectives, the peer-reviewed journal of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. The article, "Decibel Hell: The Effects of Living in a Noisy World", appears in the January 2005 edition of the journal.

12/2004 - Online registration for the 2005 annual conference now available.

11/2004 - NHCA co-sponsoring a seminar on the need for hearing conservation education in schools.  The seminar, held in Philadelphia on November 20, 2004, covered previous studies on noise and hearing loss in children, as will effective teaching techniques and available resources.
