Noise and hearing loss materials presented at
Iowa State Fair
On Monday August 16, 2004, The University
of Iowa Department of Speech Pathology Audiology hosted
the "Whaddya Hear?" exhibit at the Iowa State
Fair. Many fairgoers were educated on noise induced hearing
loss through interactive quizzes and a rolling video presentation.
They also participated in a demonstration of hearing protection
devices, including foam earplugs as well as passive and
active ear muffs. Free ear plugs, pens, bookmarks, educational
brochures including the "Crank it Down Farm
Kids" brochure developed by the National Hearing
Conservation Association and Northern Illinois University
were provided to interested passersby.
On the day of the exhibit, the fair schedule of events
also included stock car races and a Salute to Iowa's Truckers
and Veterans, so hearing protection fit right in. Thanks
to all who donated supplies and gave permission for use
of brochures; these contributions helped make the exhibit
a big success! Pictures from the event are included below.
