About the Webinar: The relationship between noise exposure and hearing loss has been recognized for hundreds of years. Less appreciated is the relationship between exposure to various therapeutic and industrial chemicals and hearing loss in populations exposed to both non-hazardous and hazardous levels of noise. This presentation will review the basics of occupational noise exposure, the emerging literature on the independent effects of potential toxic insults to the auditory system, the potential additive, and synergistic effects on hearing of concurrent chemical and noise exposure and will cover industrial hygiene best practices that can mitigate the risk of hearing loss in an occupational population.

ModeratorLaura Kauth, MA, CPS/A, CCC-A

Presenters: David C. Roskelley, MSPH, CIH, CSP and Benjamin Roberts, MPH, PhD, CIH

David C. Roskelley, MSPH, CIH, CSP

Mr. Roskelley has a Masters degree in Public Health with an emphasis in Industrial Hygiene from the University of Utah/Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (RMCOEH) and currently teaches as an adjunct faculty member. Mr. Roskelley is a Board Certified Safety Professional (CSP) as well as a Board Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH). He served on the Board and as Chair of the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) and has previously served on the AIHA Board as a Director.
Mr. Roskelley is also the founding partner of R&R Environmental, Inc. a comprehensive safety, health, and environmental consulting firm based in Sandy, Utah (United States). Additionally, Mr. Roskelley is the past chair of the National AIHA Joint Industrial Hygiene Ethics Education Committee (JIHEEC). He chaired the Joint Ethics Task Force consisting of representatives of AIHA, ACGIH, AIH, and ABIH which was responsible for overseeing the adoption of a new, comprehensive system of ethical standards for the industrial hygiene profession. He is currently serving as a member of the CAOHC committee as a member representing AIHA. Mr. Roskelley is an avid mountain climber who enjoys doing difficult things. He set a personal goal to climb the “7 summits” or the highest mountains on each of the seven continents. To date, he has climbed all seven and accomplished his goal. His next goal is to climb the “Volcanic Seven Summits”: or the highest volcano on each of the seven continents. On January 18, 2020, he reached the summit of Mount Sidley in Antarctica thus becoming the first American to complete this challenge. He successfully reached the South Pole in 2024. His next goal is to travel to the North Pole.

Benjamin Roberts, MPH, PhD, CIH

Dr. Benjamin Roberts is a Managing Risk Scientist at Benchmark Risk Group. Dr. Roberts completed a Ph.D. in Environmental Health Science and an MPH in industrial hygiene, both from the University of Michigan.  He is also a Certified Industrial Hygienist. His research is focused on the statistical analysis of occupational and environmental exposure data with an emphasis on using new technology and rigorous statistical methods to improve decision-making. Dr. Roberts is a member of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) and is active in the Big Data and Sensors Technology Content Portfolio Advisory Group (CPAG) and is also the past chair of the AIHA Noise Committee. He is also an adjunct faculty member at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) in Grand Rapids, MI. He is currently an executive committee member of the Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC) and an expert panel member of the Safe in Sound committee. He has authored or co-authored 24 peer-reviewed manuscripts, three book chapters, one monograph for the World Health Organization (WHO) and has presented at several conferences on the topics of noise, silica, and asbestos exposure, frequentist and Bayesian statistical analysis, and big data.

By the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to:

1)      Identify potential ototoxicants
2)      Describe the basic mechanisms by which they may produce hearing loss with or without co-exposure to noise
3)      Integrate basic exposure assessment techniques already used in a hearing conservation program for the management of ototoxicant exposure

Program Level: Introductory
